The benefits begin straight away. You reduce your risk of getting serious disease no matter what age you give up. However, the sooner you stop, the greater the reduction in your risk.
If you have smoked since being a teenager or young adult…
- and stop smoking before the age of about 35, your life expectancy is only slightly less than people who have never smoked.
- and stop smoking before the age of 50, you decrease the risk of dying from smoking-related diseases by 50%.
But, it is never too late to stop smoking to gain health benefits. Even if you already have COPD or heart disease, your outlook (prognosis) is much improved if you stop smoking.

How can I stop smoking?
There are many ways to become a non-smoker and these include Nicotine Patches, Inhalers, Nicotine Gums, Champix, Zyban, the stop smoking drugs, amongst many others!
Unfortunately products such as patches, gums and Inhalers can cause many negative side effects such as nightmares, nausea, indigestion, skin irritation and even long term skin damage. The simple truth is that these products are not very effective in helping people to become non-smokers.
You may have seen and heard the adverts that tell you that you can double your chances or you're up to four times more likely to quit with NHS support but what does this really mean?
The drug company Glaxo Smith Kline on their NiQuitin website tell us that the success rate for people who try to stop smoking using the cold turkey method (willpower) is a dismal 2-3%.
This means that you if you tried to quit smoking in the past and have used a nicotine replacement product then you should not feel bad if you did not quit because there was an 88% chance that you would fail.
The most effective method
Research to find the most effective way to stop smoking was carried out by the University of Iowa combining the results of more than 600 studies covering almost 72,00 people from America and Europe.
By combining the results from so many separate studies, the meta-analysis enables the real effectiveness of each technique to be picked out from the statistical ‘noise’ that often blights studies involving smaller numbers of subjects.
The conclusion of this study was that for smokers the most effective technique was found to be hypnosis with an impressive 80 per cent success rate.
Here are the success rates for different smoking cessation methods:
80% – Single Hypnosis Session
29% – Combination Techniques
25% – Smoke Aversion
24% – Acupuncture
10% – Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)
The study also found that the least successful method turned out to be advice from GP's. 'We found that involvement of physicians did not have an impact as we expected', said Schmidt, 'We speculate that the reason is that it is the content of the treatment that matters, and not the statues of the person giving it.'
